Thrilled to see that you are spreading the word. You are absolutely right about a challenge. I am a different man already but I was O.K. before. First 'training' day was yesterday - a calm day. Took my time but did Foyers to Dores- 10.5 miles in 6 hours. Superb trip - so lucky to live here - saw so much more - listening to recently arrived Chiff-chaffs, Willow warblers and others. Piped on my journey by Sandpipers - handing me on to the next pair as I travelled along the shore. Fascinating geology as shoreline is mainly cliff faces. Trees coming into leaf, gorgeous - so fresh. Great views and so quiet. Must do another section every third day. Thank you for your complimentary comments.

Nice to see that he's staying active and not afraid to go off on his own. My father-in-llaw is at a similar stage and people fuss over him all the time, never wanting to leave him along for a minute!

I love your blog. Your bio is great and it makes me want to know you and read more of your work. I was particularly drawn to your article on genealogy. My own blog for smart seniors also promotes health and ideas for independent living and I feel very strongly about people taking charge of their own lives. I would love it if you would visit my site. I look forward to visiting your site again. Linda

Thank you for this fine article.
I was quite moved by the film. It shows how human contact and an appeal to an individual's artistic senses can help restore humanity, even in a person shattered by a terrible disease like Alzheimer's.

I had the privilege of interviewing Berna Hueber, who was inspired to make this film because of the role art therapy played in helping her mother.

She said: "In the moments when she painted, my mother truly seemed to come alive. That is why we wanted to share these experiences—in the hope that they will help show how our society can address the challenge of Alzheimer's...also through the healing, communicative power of the creative arts."

For those interested, here is the complete interview:

I had no idea that gardening was helpful in the ways you've described but it sounds good to me. I have tomato plants and they are going to be happy now that I'm going to spend more time with them :-)

Wonderful post; music is so vital to life. Saw a film that shows the hows and whys of music and arts treats and beats Alzheimer's. Really remarkable.

Edited: Unfortunately, the link to the film that SunnyD left doesn't work - I'm interested, if you see this and care to resubmit the link, or just provide the title and I'll track it down! Tori

Hi Tori,

I went through a very powerful experiential weekend for men, in 1989, and part of the work was to find a mission. Long story short, my first iteration was "Heal the Children's Shame" which was more about my shame than anyone elses, and then another mission emerged, "I empower awareness and choice", and when I really remember that and get into it, it makes the hair on my stand up and gives me goose bumps. I think you should write about mission and passion and vision in conjunction with science, as if you don't already anyway. Mike

Mike! Glad to see you found your way here ... I should probably draw a better roadmap for MindTweaks readers, eh? There will be some big changes there soon (and here, too, I'm told) and hopefully a bit better integration.

I'm glad you found this post helpful - I love the idea of challenging the kids the way you suggested!
